Toshiba Thrive 10 inch tablet coming to the US in July

Toshiba is ready to deliver a second tablet next month, but only over in the States for the moment.

The Folio 100 was Toshiba’s previous effort, but was hit by problems and even withdrawn from sale at the close of last year by Dixons group.

The Thrive can surely improve on the Folio, and it certainly has a better name for a start. Spec-wise, like the Folio the Thrive is a 10 inch tablet and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

The new tablet will also have a 5 megapixel camera and 2 megapixel front facing camera for video chatters. Ports will include USB and HDMI, and the OS will be the latest version of Honeycomb, Android 3.1.

The US pricing starts at $429, although that’s for the Thrive which only has 8GB of storage. Whether or not this device will see a UK launch isn’t certain, although we’d imagine that will be the case.

While it’s due out in July in the US, it won’t likely been seen over here for another couple of months after that, however.

Toshiba vient d’annoncer avoir développé un téléviseur stéréoscopique haute définition de 21 pouces qui a le grand avantage de ne pas demander de lunettes pour que ses utilisateurs profitent de la 3D.

Le problème des lunettes

Le port de lunette est probablement le plus grand frein à l’adoption de cette technologie, car en plus d’ajouter au désagrément de l’utilisateur, elles gonflent une facture déjà salée. Toshiba affirme avoir trouvé la solution en proposant une dalle multi parallaxe.

Le parallaxe selon Toshiba

Pour faire simple, un téléviseur est perçu en 3D, car la source projette deux images, une pour chaque oeil. Les technologies reposant sur la barrière de parallaxe utilisent un filtre placé sur l’écran qui produit les deux images nécessaires. Le problème est qu’il faut être face à la télévision pour profiter de l’effet 3D et que les angles de visions sont extrêmement faibles, ce qui est inacceptable pour une utilisation de salon où l’on regarde le téléviseur depuis divers endroits de la pièce.
Pour palier ce problème, Toshiba a développé le multi parallaxe qui va créer neuf images afin que les yeux de l’utilisateur puissent profiter des deux images nécessaires pour un effet 3D quelle que soit la position face à l’écran.
Cette technologie est donc très prometteuse sur le papier, mais il conviendra de voir ce que cela donnera en pratique. Le fabricant devrait faire une présentation de son téléviseur durant le SID, un salon sur l’image numérique qui se tiendra à Seattle entre le 25 mai et le 27 mai 2010.

Toshiba announces Freeview+ HD PVR - Pocket-lint

Toshiba today announced that they will be entering the Freeview HD market in time for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

The new Freeview+ HD PVR, called the HDR5010, will come with a 500GB hard drive, offering users the chance to record all that glorious HD content off the HD broadcast channels, currently limited to BBC HD and ITV HD as well as dual tuners so you can record both at once.

That 500GB hard drive will give you 120 hours of HD recording. You'll also find 2x USB, an Ethernet port, 3x HDMI (two in, one out) as well as a SCART.

Twin Freeview HD tuners mean you'll be able to watch one channel and record from another and be able to see up to 8 days via the television guide.

The USB ports will mean you can play back content from other sources, with Toshiba mentioning that it will support DivX and MP3, but we are sure it will support other file formats too, just like their new BDX2100 announced today.

The HDR5010 will set you back a £349 and will be available in June 2010.
