Sony unveils 24 inch 3D display for PlayStation
Par Bruno le jeudi 9 juin 2011, 11:14

Sony has announced that it has plans for a 24 inch 3D monitor designed to help more PS3 owners dive into the world of 3D gaming on their console.
The 3D display will come bundled with a pair of 3D specs, an HDMI cable and a copy of Resistance 3. It’ll be out this autumn with a US price tag of $499, so hopefully a bit less in pounds over here.
The monitor is a full HD 1920×1080 LCD affair and it’s specifically designed to show off 3D at its best, with quad-speed frame sequential display technology which minimises crosstalk. In plain English, this avoids distortion and gives the clearest and most realistic 3D image possible.
Other specifications include a 5000:1 contrast ratio and 4ms response time which should ensure gaming runs nice and smoothly.
There are other innovations here, too, including a very neat sounding feature whereby two players can look at the display and see different full-screen images of the game they’re playing via their glasses.
In other words, it’s possible to play a local multiplayer game not using split-screen, but with both players using the same (full) screen and seeing their own individual content. Clever indeed, but you’ll need two pairs of glasses, of course…
A slim design is promised and two speakers plus a built-in subwoofer should ensure that the sound coming out of this display is reasonable.
The 3D glasses will be sold separately for $70 should you need a second pair for that multiplayer gaming feature. Get ready for some 3D gaming come the autumn…

Sony Pictures confirms website hacked, apologises “deeply”
Par Bruno le lundi 6 juin 2011, 09:39

Just before the weekend, Sony Pictures issued a statement to confirm it did indeed have its website compromised by hackers last week.
As we reported last week, hacker group LulzSec accessed the SonyPictures.com database and a million customer details, making off with at least 50,000 of them and data including emails, home addresses, passwords, dates of birth and so on.
This is doubly embarrassing for Sony given that it follows the PSN hacking incident which saw its PS3 gaming network down for nearly a month.
Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton along with Co-Chairman Amy Pascal issued a statement which read: “The cybercrime wave that has affected Sony companies and a number of government agencies, businesses and individuals in recent months has hit Sony Pictures as well. [Last Thursday] afternoon a group of criminal hackers known as ‘LulzSec’ claimed to have breached some of our websites.”
“We have confirmed that a breach has occurred and have taken action to protect against further intrusion. A respected team of outside experts is conducting a forensic analysis of the attack.”
Sony has contacted the FBI (again) and “deeply regrets and apologizes for any inconvenience caused to consumers by this cybercrime”.
What Sony hasn’t mentioned is the data, and indeed passwords, were reportedly unencrypted, a shameful state of security – and the attack was facilitated by a simple SQL injection.
If this is true, quite why the site had such pitiful security measures in place is what customers are really waiting for an explanation about. And if it isn’t true, you’d assume Sony would have mentioned that in the official statement.

Sony “Welcome Back” post-PSN hack freebies now available
Par Bruno le samedi 4 juin 2011, 09:44

Sony re-opened the PlayStation Store on Thursday, meaning everything is now back to normal for PS3 users online.
However, the “Welcome Back” pack of goodies designed to thank everyone for their patience while PSN was being sorted security-wise wasn’t released at that point.
Fortunately Sony promised it would be soon, and indeed it was unveiled yesterday. So what does the pack consist of, exactly?
PS3 owners can pick two free games from the following list: Dead Nation, inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty and Wipeout HD + Fury.
For PSP owners, the list is: LittleBigPlanet, ModNation Racers, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation.
To grab your gratis games, you need to go to the PlayStation Store from the XMB, click the Welcome Back banner, go into the Welcome Back category and select PlayStation 3 Free Games, then select Get Now.
Then you’ll be taken back to the Welcome Back section where you can pick and choose your two freebies.
Apart from the pair of games, Sony is also offering all PSN users 30 free days of PlayStation Plus with no charge or obligation to continue. Current premium users get 70 extra free days on their subscription.
To round the apology package off, Sony is throwing in a large number of free virtual items in PlayStation Home, and a selection of free film rentals.
The Welcome Back content will only be available for the next thirty days, so make sure you download it before the month is out.

Sony PlayStation Store back up and running
Par Bruno le jeudi 2 juin 2011, 10:30

Sony has finally got the PlayStation Store back online, six weeks after the hacking incident which caused the company to take down PSN.
However, the Welcome Back freebie offer to compensate PS3 owners for the downtime hasn’t gone live yet.
Sony wrote on its blog page: “You may have noticed that the content promised as part of the Welcome Back offer is not yet live. It is currently in the final stages of testing and will be available to download very soon; we’ll be sure to let you know when.”
The spring offers which were running in April when the network was downed are still going to be offered until June 8th, to give those who missed them a chance to procure them now.
Sony also announced that PlayStation Plus customers who were members before the outage will have an extra 70 days added to their current subscription in lieu of the time lost.
That extra time might not be showing on your account now, but should do before the end of the week.

Rumour: Sony NGP memory halved to stay competitive with 3DS
Par Bruno le lundi 30 mai 2011, 12:51

The latest rumour about Sony’s upcoming Next Generation Portable (NGP) is that the company is cutting costs with the innards so it can match up to the 3DS price tag.
The 3DS was announced with a £230 RRP but that swiftly dropped to £200, and went downwards from there. You can now pick one up for £157 at Currys as we reported earlier today.
And given that back at the start of the year, the predicted cost of the NGP was around £300, it would make sense that Sony was looking at trimming some hardware hedges to keep costs down further.
The rumour, reported by 01net (via Kotaku) claims that the NGP has had its Ram halved from 512MB to 256MB, and the planned 16GB of built-in storage is no more, with external storage cards to be used instead.
Sony isn’t messing with the graphics memory, according to the grapevine, but of course this is all speculation. No specs have ever been officially announced.
There’s a ring of truth about it all, though, and Sony will certainly have to do better than £300 if it wants to flog its NGP given the price mark the 3DS is now at.

Sony adds games to 3D TV
Par Silverlight le jeudi 29 avril 2010, 01:54
Sony has finally got around to announcing what the company will be offering the UK consumer when it comes to 3D TV.
Its offering comes in the shape of the Sony HX803 3D Ready Television, which will become available in June.
The TV will be almost the same as the one available in the US with one major exception; the TV does not come with any of the battery-powered 3D TV glasses.
Instead, Sony is offering the consumer the chance to buy accessory packs.
The good news for PS3 owners is that buyers of the Sony HX803 can obtain vouchers with download codes for 3D upgraded games including Wipeout HD, Motorstorm Pacific Ridge (demo) and Super Stardust HD.
Prices and availability are yet to be announced.
Sony Finally Makes a Profit on PS3s
Par Silverlight le jeudi 29 avril 2010, 01:45
At last, the PS3 is finally making profits for Sony.
As of February, Sony’s PS3 was losing around $18 for every unit sold. But, finally, a new component that would be used on future units will allow the company to make a profit on each system.
The 40-nanometer RSX graphics chip will be a lot cheaper and cooler thereby reducing production cost for every PS3 system.
Even better for Sony, the chip will require less overall power to run (about 15 percent), which is ultimately good for your wallet.
These consoles with updated chipsets will be available in stores as they are manufactured.
This will be a new beginning for Sony. In the future, the company could find cheaper and better materials to use for their system.
This would ultimately allow them to profit even more seeing as the PS3 has picked up its popularity largely due to the new titles and games released for the system this year.

Sony expects to sell 2.5 million 3-D TV sets this year | TopNews New Zealand
Par Silverlight le jeudi 11 mars 2010, 14:48
With indications galore that 3-D is likely to become the one of the main hardware upgrades in home entertainment in future, thanks to the recent success of movies like ‘Avatar;’ Sony is anticipating almost 2.5 million unit sales of its
3-D TVs this year.According to recent information forwarded by Sony’s TV division head, Yoshihisa Ishida, to reporters in Tokyo, Sony is looking at a 67 percent increase in its TV-set sales – from 15 million during the current year to 25 million in the fiscal year ending March 2011; thereby indicating that, over the next fiscal year, Sony’s 3-D TV-set sales will comprise nearly 10 percent of its overall TV sales.
Though Sony’s rivals Samsung and Panasonic will probably commence their sales of their respective 3-D sets before Sony, the company still has enough time to catch up in the sense that there is very limited 3-D content available as of now; and ‘Avatar’ will only be released on Blu-ray DVD towards the end of this year.
Other than expecting notable sales of its 3-D sets, Sony is taking the 3-D route even in its movie-making business – with the company announcing last month that the next film in its successful ‘Spider-Man’ franchise would be in 3-D. Moreover, the company is also working out a software update for its PlayStation 3 console to enable gamers to play 3-D games.

Sony Launches Internet-Enabled TVs In Australia
Par Silverlight le mercredi 24 février 2010, 21:33
- Sony releases 21 IPTV-enabled BRAVIA TVs in 2010
- 15 internet channels announced, including Yahoo!7, SBS and Billabong
- Simple navigation through XrossMediaBar™
The future for television changed today with Sony Australia unveiling its 2010 BRAVIA range featuring the company's first internet-enabled TVs. The BRAVIA Internet Video service signals a new era of home entertainment, with new internet channels to enjoy straight out of the box. As part of its launch, Sony Australia announced 15 channels that will be made available through its service, including catch-up TV and made-for-the-internet content.
The arrival of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) represents a shift in the way Australians can view television, with videos streamed directly from the internet to a TV. Sony’s IPTV service – known as BRAVIA Internet Video – will be accessible through 21 TVs in the 2010 BRAVIA range.
"Internet-based content is driving the evolution of home entertainment – turning electronics products, such as TVs, into true multimedia hubs," said Paul Colley, Technology Communications Manager, Sony Australia. "With BRAVIA Internet Video, Australians will be able to catch up on their favourite shows and videos all from the comfort of the TV in their living room. With no scheduling restrictions for accessing online content, IPTV is quite simply TV on your terms."
Watch what you want, when you want
Following the release of its new BRAVIA Internet Video TVs from next month,
Sony will begin to roll out 15 new channels (11 available immediately), which
can be navigated simply and easily through the XrossMediaBar on the TV.
Additional channels will appear automatically on the TV as they are added over
time, with no modification required. The IPTV channels are designed to
complement your existing Pay TV and free-to-air channels. A combination of
Australian locally signed and global channels, Sony's BRAVIA Internet Video
line-up includes:
| Yahoo!7 | Podcasts |
| SBS | Livestrong |
| Billabong | Ford Models |
| YouTube |
Epicurious |
| Wired | Blip |
| Golflink | Style.com |
| eHow | NPR (audio) |
| Video Detective |
"Australians are rapidly becoming multi-taskers. They navigate through old and new media and are looking to use them in ways that best suits them. This certainly is one of those game changing moments, broadband has become an entertainment channel and for that purpose is best enjoyed on a TV screen in the lounge room," said industry analyst Paul Budde, Managing Director of BuddeComm.
This additional content is streamed over the internet through a broadband connection to the TV without additional set-top boxes or complicated internet set up. As BRAVIA Internet Video is connected to the internet, the variety of content and channels available will continue to grow. The BRAVIA Internet Video service is free, utilising an existing broadband internet connection and package. There is also the ability to add pay-per-view movies or content in the future.
Selected BRAVIA models also include handy on-screen Internet Widgets so you can access real-time updates from applications such as Yahoo Weather, Yahoo News, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. There are also exclusive BRAVIA Internet Widgets such as a FIFA World Cup 2010 Countdown.
