Netflix licenses Irdeto’s Cloakware Embedded Security to protect streaming content | VentureBeat

Digital content delivery and security company Irdeto announced today that Netflix plans to use its Cloakware Embedded Security as one of many tools to protect streaming media.

Irdeto’s technology allows Netflix to protect its content across a wide variety of devices without rewriting the content’s security. In addition, it protects content throughout its entire life cycle, and not just during distribution.

Irdeto describes the technology behind Cloakware like so:

The full [Cloakware] suite includes a transformation engine that scrambles code and hinders reverse engineering and tampering; platform agnostic white-box cryptography and other supporting assets including anti-debug protection, validation tools to detect tampering of code modules and data file encryption.

Now that Netflix is finally beginning to spread to mobile devices — it’s on the iPad, and will be coming to the iPhone and Windows Phone 7 devices — it’s no surprise that the company is trying to figure out ways to simplify its protection schemes.

Better content security will strengthen Netflix’s relationships with movie studios and television companies. It will offer media companies piece of mind about making their content available through Netflix’s streaming service — which is helpful for both existing media relationships, and those that have been avoiding the streaming media bandwagon.

Cloakware Embedded Security will also allow Netflix to easily protect bring its streaming content to more consumer devices. Not only will it be technically easier to build on security solution across multiple platforms, but it will also ensure that media companies feel that their content is protected no matter where Netflix brings it.

Irdeto has headquarters in Beijing and Amsterdam, and employs about 850 people around the world. It’s a subsidiary of Naspers, a multinational media company based out of Cape Town, South Africa.

ORF and Sky secure Austrian Bundesliga rights | News - Rapid TV News

austria_bundesligaAustrian public broadcaster ORF and pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland, which covers Germany and Austria, have managed to keep the TV rights for Austria’s domestic soccer league Bundesliga. The league signed a new 3-year contract with both broadcasters starting at the 2010/11 season.

ORF and Sky will pay a total of €17m per year, up from the €14m a year paid under the previous contract. Each season, ORF will continue to screen 36 live games and show summaries of the other matches while Sky subscribers can watch all 180 games live.

In the industry, the new agreement is mainly seen as a blow to new Austrian commercial channel Servus TV. The broadcaster, which is backed by energy drink manufacturer Red Bull, also tried to acquire the rights, hoping for a considerable boost of its viewer figures and popularity.

Despite Servus TV apparently having offered more money, the league is thought to have opted for ORF as its free-TV partner as the public broadcaster has a wider reach which would lead to higher sponsorship income.

Cyfrowy Polsat reveals Nagra CA terms | Broadband TV News

Cyfrowy Polsat has put a value of PLN 356 million (€92.2 million) on its new ten-year conditional access contract with Nagravison. Kudelski finally completes OpenTV acquisition | Broadband TV News

The purchase of middleware and interactive advertising specialist OpenTV by the Swiss technology group Kudelski has finally been completed.

An announcement was made at the close of the markets in New York at 17.00 on Friday March 26. Open TV has now completed the redemption of the outstanding OpenTV Class A ordinary shares meaning that Kudelski now wholly owns the company.

In a statement The Kudelski Group said it saw significant potential in the integration of the teams and product roadmaps of both OpenTV and the Kudelski Group’s digital television division. “A unified market vision will allow the Group to align product, solutions, marketing and sales strategies. For customers, this will translate into more flexibility and efficiency. Additionally, employees will benefit from increased career opportunities, as well as cross-organization and international exchanges”.

The battle for OpenTV led to some bitter exchanges between Kudelski and shareholder interest organisations, such as the Discovery Group and Arcadia Capital Advisors, over the company’s purchase price and the amount of investment required.

A settlement of $1.55 per share was finally reached with Kudelski securing 96% of voting rights.

TiVo wins Conax biz

Conax, the Telenor-owned conditional access company, has selected TiVo technology for its ‘next generation’ of set-top boxes.

A joint statement said: “This relationship brings together two companies known for changing traditional approaches to pay television.

TiVo is the gold standard for the delivery of advanced television services through an intuitive, stunning user interface, while Conax’s multi-platform security technology forms the underpinning of television services delivered to operators covering over 100 million households in over 80 countries.

Through this partnership, the companies will put the TiVo experience, including its revolutionary integration of IP-delivered video into an off-the-shelf package that can be quickly and easily deployed by operators using Conax-certified platforms in Scandinavia, mainland Europe and India, among other geographies.

All of this can be done without having to endure a cumbersome, costly middleware deployment that could slow progress and hinder business objectives.”

Geir Bjørndal, EVP Products & Markets at Conax, said: “While the European market is ripe for VOD and other interactive services, many operators are stifled by the expensive integration efforts needed to convert roadmaps into reality.

TiVo has a phenomenal reputation in the US, not only for inventing the PVR, but for creating the market’s most comprehensive hybrid broadcast/broadband platform.

They are the only player that has successfully integrated top-tier content from diverse Internet sources like Netflix, Blockbuster, YouTube, and Amazon VOD along with linear television into a single, vivid user interface already available to consumers in the United States.

Our European customers have made clear that they plan to deploy similar capabilities and we can’t imagine a better technology partner than TiVo to help us make it happen, and strengthen our competitive market position.”

Bjørndal added that interest in the new solution is already high from key customers connected to TV operations that include security provided by Conax.

Integrating TiVo’s software with Conax security solutions will reduce certain hardware costs and also allow for deeper assimilation of security within the new platform.

Conax’s growth has been significant during recent years primarily due to its open standards STB approach, providing a wide selection of certified consumer hardware devices.

The new strategy will leverage TiVo’s strong brand and more than 10 years of expertise developing advanced television platforms.

Joshua Danovitz, VP/GM International, TiVo, said: “Conax has amassed a stellar record for helping its customers quickly launch new services in a variety of environments without major startup complexity.

“Its broad portfolio of set-top box and pay television partners is testament to the value of this approach.

“We are very enthusiastic about this new relationship with Conax, particularly because it means operators will soon be able to distribute a highly differentiated, next generation user interface that applies TiVo’s leadership in marrying broadband delivered content with the traditional television experience.”

Irdeto, a leading expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, today announced that middleware and interactive TV technology provider Selevision has selected Irdeto’s middleware solution and conditional access system (CAS) for its new High Definition Personal Video Recorders (HD PVRs). The HD PVRs, currently in field testing in Saudi Arabia, will enable content providers to run highly tailored advertisements – a market first in the Middle East. In addition, Selevision's HD PVRs will be protected by Irdeto's CAS and secure chip set – another first for the region – to allow the company to comprehensively secure premium content, while delivering a personalized experience for consumers, through uniquely selected programs and commercials.

"Irdeto’s technology meets our needs for a flexible solution that enables us to deliver targeted content to consumers, while protecting it against piracy, which continues to be rife in this region,” said Dr. Raed Khusheim, CEO and founder of Selevision. “Irdeto's solution allows us to constantly enhance our targeted advertising capabilities. Irdeto was a natural choice for us, given the company’s proven track record of delivering industry-leading conditional access solutions in the Middle East. We look forward to expanding our services to other regions, and to continuing to work with Irdeto."

According to Informa, at the end of 2014, the Middle East and North Africa region will have approximately 50 million multichannel TV homes. In response to this growth as well as the need to differentiate themselves to both advertisers and viewers, Selevision selected Irdeto’s industry-leading middleware technology to empower advertisers to effectively reach a wide range of viewers with ads that are directly relevant to consumers.

"The advanced features and functionality that the Selevision HD PVR offers to consumers and advertisers' is a testimony to the maturity that Irdeto middleware has reached,” stated David Canellos, senior vice president, sales and marketing for Irdeto. “The Middle Eastern market is ripe for innovation, and the ability to reach viewers with targeted advertising is increasingly important, as audiences are progressively looking for content that is personalized and relevant."

Moreover, advertisers can now measure the effectiveness of commercials through Irdeto’s comprehensive reports which outline the exact number of views received. Additionally, Selevision is able to customize its end-user interface, easily add third party applications and support optional PVR extensions as well as other feature-rich add-ons. Irdeto’s unique solution helps advertisers and content providers alike increase the power of each commercial and maximize return on investment.
